Upper Campus Art students immersed themselves in ideas, concepts, skills, and techniques throughout the fall semester.
The Upper Campus Visual Arts Exhibition: Best of Semester I is now on display, featuring student work along the stairwell gallery, extending to Founders Union, and spilling into the Library. This exhibit showcases the breadth of the Sierra Canyon Visual Arts Program, highlighting pieces from foundational courses such as 7th Grade exploratory 2D and 3D classes, Introductory Studio Art for 8th Grade, and advanced art and design courses for 9th-12th Grade students.
The exhibit features artwork from Drawing and Painting classes, highlighting student explorations in new media and their ability to see everyday objects from a new perspective. Through monochromatic acrylic still-life studies, they focus on contour lines and intricate details. These exercises strengthen their understanding of composition, lighting, and the nuances that bring objects to life, with subjects ranging from paper bags to landscapes.
The Photography section features a compelling collection of student work, highlighting a diverse range of subject matter and creative expression. Utilizing state-of-the-art DSLR cameras, students have expanded their technical proficiency and developed innovative approaches to visual storytelling, demonstrating significant growth within a single semester.
Upper School students are required to complete two years of an art elective. The Upper Campus Visual Arts Exhibition: Best of Semester I features notable works from second-year students, including expressive hand sculptures and architectural models of visitor centers designed for locations in Norway and Greece. Students in third- and fourth-year courses demonstrate advanced mastery of their chosen media, progressing to AP Art classes in 2D, 3D Design, or Drawing. This year, AP Photography students are prominently featured in the stairwell, where their work demonstrates the dynamic portfolios they continue to build.
The Upper Campus Visual Arts Exhibition: Best of Semester I showcases the talent and growth of Sierra Canyon's student artists across various disciplines. By nurturing both creative and critical thinking, the Visual Arts Department provides students with the tools to develop their artistic expression and inspire innovation.
