Sierra Canyon students celebrated Earth Day with eco-friendly initiatives, encouraging thoughtful action on and off campus.
Lower School students kicked off the week by creating "Wishing Tree Leaves" as part of their exploration of Responsibility, the final theme of the Big 4 Character Program. Students made personal pledges, such as "I will recycle more" or "I will turn off lights when I leave a room," while younger students added drawings of their favorite aspects of the Earth. These colorful pledges were displayed on five large wooden trees during Tuesday's assembly as visible reminders of each student's commitment to the planet.
During the Earth Day festivities, Lower School grade-level groups gathered on the Nikou Family Field for a message highlighting the Big 4 Character Program, followed by a collaborative Earth Day-themed game. Each student received a commemorative Earth Day sticker and a packet of California wildflower seeds, assembled and distributed by Mr. Johnson and the Green Team, who repurposed Ziploc bags to support the initiative's sustainability goals. The Green Team also spearheaded a campus-wide effort to promote no-waste lunches, encouraging students to reduce single-use packaging. In celebration of the day, the Parent Association provided festive"earth cup" treats made of chocolate pudding, cookie crumbles, gummy worms, and colorful flower-shaped lollipops.
Earth Day-inspired learning continued across Lower School classrooms throughout the week. In Pre-Kindergarten, students created mini-greenhouses with bean plants to take home and care for. Kindergarten launched a dedicated Sustainability Week, emphasizing the principles of reducing, reusing, recycling, and refusing. Their efforts culminated in transforming collected recyclables into imaginative animal and robot sculptures. Students in 1st Grade explored Earth-friendly practices through art—painting coffee filters to resemble the planet, decorating pots for fruits and vegetables, and designing reusable tote bags. In 2nd Grade, students blended creativity with reflection by composing Earth-themed acrostic poems.
Our 6th and 7th Graders participated in a broader Earth Day effort to beautify both campus and community. Students in 6th Grade enhanced the Lower School landscape by planting flowers around Founders Hall. In the local community, 7th Grade students participated in Service Learning by partnering with Volunteers Cleaning Communities to clean Chatsworth Street.
At Sierra Canyon, a strong sense of community prevails—rooted in the belief that every individual plays a role in helping it thrive. This year's Earth Day efforts reflected that commitment, as students took meaningful action to care for both their campus and the world around them.
