Sierra Canyon hosted its inaugural hackathon, Hack the Valley, providing students with a dynamic 24-hour experience.

Hack the Valley showcased Sierra Canyon's innovative spirit by bringing together local students of all experience levels to explore technology and creativity. More than just a coding competition, the event centered around the theme of "street-smarts" and encouraged participants to develop real-world solutions for everyday challenges. Participants competed for prizes while exploring music, design, modeling, and project management while developing collaboration and presentation skills. They developed a range of innovative projects, including using Roblox to build interactive dialogues on avoiding online scams, creating visual novels to promote self-love, and designing mapping software to help people avoid high-crime areas. Guided by industry leaders, students had the opportunity to push the boundaries in an inspiring and enriching environment.

Organized by the AI/Future Thinkers Club and its president, Nathan W. '26, Hack the Valley marked a significant milestone for both Sierra Canyon and the San Fernando Valley, which had never before hosted a hackathon. Drawing inspiration from Computer Science Department Chair Mr. DeVaughn-Brown's experience organizing similar events, Nathan led the initiative by securing sponsorships, designing a website, managing logistics, and collaborating with faculty to bring the event to life. Reflecting on the support from the school community, he shared, "We received energetic support from all of Sierra Canyon, pushing us to make the first-ever hackathon the best it could be."

As a dedicated student leader and active member of multiple organizations, Nathan balanced his numerous commitments, including a challenging academic load, while overseeing every detail of the hackathon. His leadership was crucial to the event's success. He worked closely with industry experts across California, organizing meetings where these professionals shared valuable insights into artificial intelligence and tech, ensuring a meaningful, hands-on experience for all participants. Reflecting on the event, Anoush A. '26 shared, "I learned a lot about coding and how to incorporate original drawings into the code. It was a great experience, and it was super fun."

The relationship between teacher and student is at the heart of every excellent academic institution, and Hack the Valley exemplified the power of that partnership. The School cultivates this relationship by encouraging this shared pursuit of knowledge that defines the Sierra Canyon experience.
