Afterschool Enrichment & Day Care

Academics

Our Extended Day Care (EDC) program provides supervised extended play before and after school. We offer this program as a convenience for working parents, but it also provides the opportunity for any student to benefit from and enjoy unstructured play with peers before and after school.

EDC is available from 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. to all Lower School families free of charge. If you have questions regarding Extended Day Care, please contact Garrett Crosby.

Enrichment Program

Cultivate new interests and develop existing talents through a rich variety of enrichment offerings. Classes are offered Monday – Friday, before and afterschool, for Pre-Kindergarten—Grade 6 students in the fall and spring semesters.  From math and music to robotics and architecture, enjoy exploring our supplemental programming.

Green Team: 3rd – 6th (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: From planting and maintaining the School garden to completing various art projects and discussing environmental issues, this club is the perfect place to develop your 'green thumb' and get your hands dirty. We are looking forward to another fantastic semester!

Instructors: Mr. Johnson is starting his seventeenth year at Sierra Canyon and has been a part of the Green Team for over ten years. Mrs. Lucid is a Pre-K Assistant Teacher and is excited to work with the Green Team for her sixth year! Homework Club: 1st – 6th (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: Welcome to our delightful Cooking Class for young chefs in Pre-K – 2nd Grade! In this interactive and hands-on cooking adventure, children will learn the basics of food preparation, kitchen safety, and healthy eating habits. Our cooking class is designed to spark children's curiosity about food, encourage creativity in the kitchen, and instill a love for cooking that will last a lifetime.

Tiny Toes: Pre-K & K (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: This interactive class builds on primary dance movements, then quickly moves into basic dance techniques and terminology. Featuring Hip-Hop, Ballet, and Jazz dance forms, Tiny Toes provides students with a true dance studio experience focused on confidence, skill, and coordination.

Instructor: Mrs. Jessica Steinhart spent her childhood and teenage years dancing at numerous dance studios in the valley and performing in community theater productions. In college, she studied with Dennon and Sayhber Rawles, the late Margaret Hyunn, Lisa Lock, and Robert Salas. Jessica founded the Sierra Canyon Lower School Dance Company in the spring of 2015. The Company continues to partner with the Upper Campus Arts and Athletic programs to deliver thrilling performances and entertainment throughout the school year.

 

SC Chamber Ensemble: Pre-K – 6th (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Instructors: Dr. Lauren Deutsch, Mr. Pedram Pourghazi, Ms. Leslie Gonzalez, Ms. Rachel Coosaia, Rebecca Yeh, and Ms. Sepideh Sharifdashty

Price: $595

Class Description: Chamber Ensemble is for students playing violin, viola, or cello at a level of late Suzuki Book 1 or higher with advanced sound and intonation. The students will be separated to facilitate differentiated instruction and will focus on Suzuki late Book 1 to Suzuki Book 3 level pieces. At this level, students will be assigned melody or harmony parts, and class time will be used to learn how to put the parts together while improving basic techniques at the same time. SC Chamber Ensemble will play at events such as Homecoming, Grandparents' Day, World Language Week, Music in the Canyons, Universal Studios, and other events. Enrolled students commit to a year-round course and participate in any extra rehearsals and performances throughout the year. She has completed original research studying biomechanics of violin playing. Many of her students have won competitions, held leadership positions with top youth orchestras in the city, and have continued their music studies in college. Her students typically start with her as young as two years old and continue studying with her until graduating high school. Lauren also enjoys math and science and holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Kinesiology from USC, where she was awarded a full academic scholarship. She is on the board of the Music Teachers' Association of California, is an active participant in the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and has served as an adjudicator for SMAC LA Graduation Program for close to 15 years. A native of Iran, he graduated with a bachelors and masters from Art University of Tehran, and he completed a second master's degree from CSUN. He is an active member of the Music Teachers' Association of California and Suzuki Association of the Americas. This is Pedram's third year at Sierra Canyon, and he is excited to continue to bring his expertise to the music program.

Ms. Leslie Gonzalez holds a bachelors degree in violin performance. New to the Sierra Canyon faculty, this will be her first year as an associate music teacher. Originally from Mexico, she speaks fluent Spanish. She grew up learning the Suzuki method as part of the El Sistema Program, and she is excited to spread her love of music with the students at Sierra Canyon. 

Ms. Rachel Coosaia is a professional cellist and string instructor in Los Angeles, California. Rachel has more than 30 years of orchestral experience and regularly works as a studio musician. Currently, Rachel has a cello studio comprising 25 private students, and she has experience as a music coach at private independent schools. This will be Rachel's third year at Sierra Canyon.

Ms. Rebecca Yeh is a professional cellist and string instructor in the Los Angeles area. She has a bachelor's degree from CSUN in cello performance. She enjoys teaching both private and group string classes at other schools in the area, and she is looking forward to studying Music Therapy. Violin and Cello Suzuki Strings: Beginners: 1st – 6th (3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.)

Class Description: This course is for new violin, viola, and cello students and students who have enrolled in one semester of instruction. Students will learn how to hold the violin and bow, actively listen to match pitch, and enjoy making music with each other! The class will include 30 minutes of differentiated instruction. Students may move to the more advanced Monday 3:30 p.m. group with teacher recommendation. Parents are encouraged to attend classes to learn how to help their children practice at home. Class Description: This course is exclusively for violin students who participated in the enrichment class for at least one year and are working towards mastering the twinkle variations with fingers. This class will focus on more advanced repertoire and technique. Students in this class are intentionally preparing to enter the SC Chamber Ensemble.

Math Team

 Class Description: Math Teams meet each week and practice problems and activities associated with the contests in which the School has participated for years. Students who sign up enjoy a subscription to Beast Academy, the elementary arm of The Art of Problem Solving, and a host of registrations for and resources from various contest preparation programs, including The Caribou Cup, Noetic Learning, California Mathematics League, Math Kangaroo, and others. Students enjoy thematic activities, rigorous and rich problem-solving opportunities, and interactive digital programs, all in the spirit of flexing their reasoning skills and calculating cognitive capacities. There are additional opportunities for hands-on activities to deepen problem-solving experiences and to complement the School's Singapore Math program.

Class Description: Young Ninjas is a high-energy program introducing children to fundamental martial arts elements, like blocks, kicks, strikes, and other skills. Through skill training, fun games, creative challenges, and pad work on foam targets, children develop self-confidence and learn to enjoy being physically active in a non-contact setting. KI-YAH!

Instructor: Mr. Valentino Ramiro received his first-degree black belt in Tung Soo Do from Master Gabriel Barron of Barron Academy. Valentino began his martial arts journey at the age of nine and has trained in various martial arts styles since 2008. This gave him the experience and the passion for improving others and improving himself every step of the way. Valentino is a fun, outgoing, passionate, and dedicated instructor who looks forward to teaching and bettering others in multiple aspects of life, not just kicking and punching.

Class Description: This exciting and engaging tennis enrichment class is designed for young learners from Pre-K – 3rd Grade who are ready to develop essential motor skills while having fun! The class focuses on enhancing physical agility through running, jumping, and stretching exercises, helping children develop strength, flexibility, and balance. Each session introduces simple tennis techniques, such as how to hold a racket, strike the ball, and move with control. Comic Book Creators TM: Superheroes: 1st – 6th (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: In this course, students will discover their inner Superhero through the creation of their very own comic book! In this awesome class, students will learn how to build characters, stories, and the step-by-step process of creating a comic book. Through sketching, creating self-portraits, and developing backgrounds, these practices can be transformed. The instructor will guide the students as they brainstorm, storyboard, pencil, ink, and color. After the session is over, the comic booklets will be taken back to our studio and professionally edited and assembled! When complete, the comic books will be delivered to the students and are theirs to keep, share, and treasure!

Trailblazer’s Imaginarium: 3rd – 6th (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: Trailblazer's Imaginarium is an exciting after-school program for 3rd – 6th Grade students that combines physical activity with brain-teasing challenges. During the second semester season, students will enhance their movement, coordination, and problem-solving skills through fun activities like sports-based games, obstacle courses, rhythmic exercises, and riddles. This program emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and safety while helping students achieve grade-level benchmarks.

Instructor: Coach Ron Edmondson is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with extensive experience as an educator and mentor. His expertise in physical education and cognitive development ensures a fun, engaging, and purposeful learning experience. Coach Edmondson is passionate about creating a positive environment where students can grow physically and mentally through movement and creative challenges.

Class Description: Sierra Canyon Choir is a year-long performance class open to 2nd – 6th Grade students interested in developing their vocal skills. Students will learn proper vocal techniques as they enjoy singing a variety of repertoire. Students will focus on concepts such as matching pitch, blending, working as a team, becoming sharper listeners, and developing better voice control through consistent practice. They should commit to morning rehearsals, arriving on time to develop their skills well and preserve the integrity of the group efforts. Leslie enjoyed choir throughout her life and is passionate about building a choir program at Sierra Canyon and relishes the opportunity for students across grade levels to work together in this context.  She has been teaching private violin lessons for eight years and is also an active performer around the Los Angeles area. She grew up learning the Suzuki method as part of the El Sistema Program, and she is excited to spread her love of music with the students at Sierra Canyon.

Class Description: This course is for brand new beginning violin, viola, and cello students and students who have only taken one semester of instruction. Students will learn the foundation of holding the violin and bow, listening skills to match pitch, making a nice tone on the open strings in many different rhythmic patterns, and enjoying making music with each other! We will have 30 minutes of intense differentiated instruction, which at this level is physically demanding for students. Once students are ready to move to the more advanced Monday 3:30 group, they can move at any time with teacher recommendation. Parents are encouraged to attend the class to learn how to help their children practice at home. Participants should commit to taking the course year-round and participate in the final recital at the end of the year. Class Description: Chamber Ensemble is for students playing violin, viola, or cello at a level of late Suzuki Book 1 or higher with advanced sound and intonation. The students will be separated to facilitate differentiated instruction and will focus on Suzuki late Book 1 to Suzuki Book 3 level pieces. At this level, students will be assigned melody or harmony parts, and class time will be used to learn how to put the parts together while improving basic techniques at the same time. SC Chamber Ensemble will play at events such as Homecoming, Grandparents' Day, World Language Week, Music in the Canyons, Universal Studios, and other events. Class Description: Konnichiwa! Ready to embark on a culinary adventure through Japan? In this exciting and interactive class, students will have the chance to explore the rich world of Japanese cuisine, from iconic snacks to delicious main dishes. Whether a student is a beginner or a seasoned foodie, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Each session will focus on a different aspect of Japanese food, culture, and traditions. Students will enjoy hands-on experiences making or tasting a variety of dishes from savory ramen, sushi, and bento boxes to sweet treats like mochi, shrimp chips, and pickled veggie delights. Attendant to these culinary adventures, students will dive into the stories behind these foods, learning about the origins of dishes, seasonal ingredients, and the cultural significance of Japanese cuisine.

The class will also take a closer look at the Japanese language, art, and customs, pick up useful Japanese phrases, explore traditional food presentations, and even learn about Japanese etiquette and how food is shared and enjoyed in Japan.

Michaeleen has been teaching and coaching children for almost 16 years. She has had the privilege and honor to choreograph and direct many shows including 42nd Street, Grease, Oklahoma and Music Man. Class Description: Math Teams meet each week and practice problems and activities associated with the contests in which the School has participated for years. Students who sign up enjoy a subscription to Beast Academy, the elementary arm of The Art of Problem Solving, and a host of registrations for and resources from various contest preparation programs, including The Caribou Cup, Noetic Learning, California Mathematics League, Math Kangaroo, and others. Students enjoy thematic activities, rigorous and rich problem-solving opportunities, and interactive digital programs, all in the spirit of flexing their reasoning skills and calculating cognitive capacities. There are additional opportunities for hands-on activities to deepen problem-solving experiences and to complement the School's Singapore Math program.

Captain Kicks Soccer: Pre-K – 2nd (3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

Class Description: Captain Kicks concentrates on skills like passing, shooting, and dribbling while also developing young athletes’ sense of sportsmanship, growth mindset, and team dynamics. Children will engage in age-appropriate competitions along with a scrimmage at the end of every session.

Step Dancing:  3rd – 6th (8:00 a.m. – 8:40 a.m.)

Instructor: Anthony Jackson

Price: $595

Class Description: The course will focus on teaching students about the Stepping movement, exercises, culture, and education, originating from West Africa and dating back to the early 15th Century. The style of movement is widely used by NPHC. 
 
Stepping is a form of percussive dance that is a highly energetic art form. Performers use their bodies as instruments to produce complex rhythms and sound through a mixture of footsteps, spoken words, handclaps, and dance.
 
Students will perform year-round at school events.

Instructor: Anthony Jackson's work can be attributed to his New Orleans roots, a culture so dynamic in movement and filled with life and celebration. His Cajun heritage has inspired him to create vibrant, high-energy, and diverse choreography. Jackson continues to push his creativity within the Los Angeles Entertainment community. He has worked with some of the industry's greatest artists and brands, including Chris Brown, Coca-Cola, Dawn Richard, Britney Spears, CBS, and Lexus.
