Throughout Black History Month, Sierra Canyon provided Lower and Upper Campus students with meaningful opportunities to explore and celebrate Black culture, history, and achievements.

The Black Student Union (BSU) launched the month by greeting Lower School students during the morning carpool, setting a welcoming tone for the celebrations ahead. Throughout February, our younger Trailblazers participated in a Gallery Walk featuring informative displays on influential Black figures, using scavenger hunts to explore key contributions and share discoveries with classmates. Additionally, Upper Campus BSU members visited Lower Campus classrooms to read to Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students, sharing books such as Jabari JumpsWhistle for WillieThe Year We Learned to Fly, and The Me I Choose to Be, encouraging meaningful discussions and a love of literature.

Both campuses embraced cultural celebrations throughout the month, featuring spirit-themed days, a high-energy performance by the Melanated Jump Squad showcasing Double Dutch Jump Rope, and a Mardi Gras event with a Creole food tasting. As the month concluded, students gathered for engaging assemblies that included interactive trivia games and a Lower School Step Team performance. The festivities culminated on the Upper Campus with the BSU-hosted Soul Food Luncheon, providing a meaningful opportunity to celebrate culture and community through food.

At Sierra Canyon, our goal is to foster a school culture that is inclusive, welcoming, and celebrates everyone. Moments of celebration like these foster unity, strengthen our connections and reinforce the importance of learning from and supporting one another.

Thank you to the Upper Campus Black Student Union, Parents of Black Students, and the DEI Cultural Celebrations Committee for their dedication and collaboration in bringing this celebration to life. Special appreciation to Amena Mebane (Mahailey '32 and Malia '38), Shakira Martin (Dylan '32 and Kash '36), Kai Mitchell (Charlie '36), Chris Jean-Baptiste (Sebastien '32), and all the families, students, faculty, and staff whose leadership and contributions made this month so impactful.
