During March, in honor of Women’s History Month, the Lower School recognized the extraordinary contributions of women through meaningful reflections and creative projects.
Throughout the month, students explored the lasting impact of trailblazing female figures whose contributions have profoundly shaped history. As part of the celebration, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Parent Association (DEIPA) curated a campus Gallery Walk featuring posters highlighting notable women through powerful quotes and brief biographies. Designed with our youngest learners in mind, the Gallery Walk offers an age-appropriate, engaging introduction to these women and their contributions.
In Lower School classrooms, students engaged in various activities to reflect on the accomplishments of inspiring women. Pre-Kindergarten students brought their studies to life by crafting images of Amelia Earhart soaring through the skies and Jane Goodall with one of her chimpanzees. Students in 1st Grade wrote heartfelt responses about the women who had the most significant influence on their lives, with many naming family members like their mothers, grandmothers, and sisters. As part of their Readers Workshop, 2nd Grade explored the stories of women like Malala Yousafzai and Susan B. Anthony, learning how their courage and determination changed the course of history. In 5th Grade, students collaborated on detailed portraits of influential women—including Frida Kahlo, Mae Jemison, and J.K. Rowling—conducting research and showcasing key facts, timelines, and major accomplishments.
A special highlight of the month was a visit from Olympic gold medalist and celebrated track and field athlete Allyson Felix (Camryn '37), who spoke with Kindergarten students about the importance of dedication, perseverance, and striving for excellence. Inspired by her story, students created their own medals recognizing qualities such as "best listener" and "math wizard," reinforcing that greatness comes in many forms and lives within each of us.
Women's History Month offered students a meaningful opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation for all the vital roles of women shaping our world. Through these experiences, students are encouraged to see themselves as future changemakers, following in the footsteps of the remarkable women who came before them.
