This week, the Class of 2029 participated in meaningful Service Learning projects directly impacting their local community.

During their visit to Big Sunday's headquarters in Hollywood, students engaged in service initiatives to support families affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires, as well as organizations dedicated to assisting those in need. Big Sunday's mission—to "connect people through helping"—is reflected in its diverse range of service opportunities. As part of their efforts, students sorted clothing donations for individuals displaced by the fires and presented books collected through the Middle School Student Council's Book Drive. These contributions will support Big Sunday's ongoing donation efforts as affected families, schools, and libraries work to rebuild their collections.

In addition, Trailblazers participated in a service initiative supporting My Friend's Place, an organization dedicated to assisting youth experiencing homelessness. Following a presentation from a representative about the challenges faced by unhoused teens, students assembled 300 snack bags for distribution that evening, each accompanied by a personalized card with messages of encouragement written by students.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Koss, Director of Grades 7–9, emphasized the importance of service at this stage of development, "Adolescence is a great time to discover service. Young people are attuned to fairness and want to do what they can to repair the world. Big Sunday empowers people of all ages to help in the ways they can. Whether by donating from their book collection, creating a card with a message they crafted, or carrying heavy boxes of clothing from the storage to be sorted by classmates, each student could find a project that played to their strengths and gave the whole day meaning. It was awesome to see the students united in activities that directly benefit our community."

To continue the Middle School Service Learning curriculum, the 7th Grade will participate in a street cleanup project in Chatsworth this April. Led by Volunteers Cleaning Communities and aligning with Earth Day, this initiative will fortify students' beliefs in their own potential to make a positive difference in their community.

At Sierra Canyon, Service Learning fosters personal growth, broadens student perspectives, and instills a deeper understanding of the world, allowing students to cultivate a lifelong commitment to community engagement.
