
Sierra Canyon's Upper School Math Team earned 1st- and 2nd-place finishes this spring at prestigious competitions hosted by Canyon Crest Academy, La Cañada High School, and USC.
Canyon Crest Academy Math Bonanza - March 8
Sierra Canyon students delivered an outstanding performance at the annual Canyon Crest Academy Math Bonanza, earning the prestigious Rising All-Star Award for Best New School.
In the Individual Round, Nikhil M. '26 and Tiger Z. '25 advanced to Tie-Breakers. Tiger Z. claimed 1st place, outperforming a top opponent—and friend—from the USA national team, while Nikhil placed 8th overall after winning five out of seven matches.
In the Team Rounds, Sierra Canyon fielded teams in both the A and B divisions. In Division A, the team earned 2nd place in the Team Round, 3rd place in the Lightning Round, and finished 2nd overall. In Division B, Sierra Canyon placed 6th in the Lightning Round.

La Cañada High School Aleph-5 Competition - March 15
Sierra Canyon's Math Team delivered an outstanding performance at the sixth annual Aleph Competition, earning 1st place overall.
Tiger Z. '25 captured 1st place in the Problem-Solving Round, while James B. '26 earned 3rd. Their strong performances, along with that of Thomas M. '27, advanced them to the public Buzzer Round—a fast-paced elimination competition in front of a live audience. In the Buzzer Round, Tiger Z. secured his third 1st-place finish of the day, and Thomas M. finished 3rd.
In the Speed Round, five Trailblazers placed among the top 10: Baer B. '28, Atticus M. '27, Thomas M. '27, Nikhil M. '26, and Tiger Z. '25, who once again earned 1st place.
Representing Sierra Canyon at the competition were Baer B. '28, Owen L. '27, Thomas M. '27, Rayton S. '29, Danny W. '26, Chris X. '27, Max Z. '28, James B. '26, Atticus M. '27, Nikhil M. '26, Lynn R. '28, Ryan X. '26, Thomas L. '28, and Tiger Z. '25.
University of Southern California Math Competition - March 29
Among 39 teams and 138 competitors, Sierra Canyon's Team Round group—Owen L. '27, Nathan W. '26, Chris X. '27, and Tiger Z. '25—earned 1st place overall at the USC Spring SCMC, one of Southern California's largest high school math competitions. Tiger Z. also captured 1st place in the individual competition, advancing to the Lightning Round, where he moved swiftly through the finals to secure another 1st-place finish.
The Spring Break event opened with a lecture by a USC Mathematics Department professor, offering students insight into college-level mathematical thinking and research. Representing Sierra Canyon were Tiger H. '28, Nathan W. '26, Rachel G. '28, Owen L. '27, Rayton S. '29, Chris X. '27, Max Z. '28, and Tiger Z. '25.
California Math League
The Math Team's season-long commitment was reflected in this year's California Math League (CML) results, where Sierra Canyon earned 1st place in Los Angeles County and ranked 5th across the state.
The CML recognized five students as High Scoring Students: Atticus M. and Thomas M. scored 33 out of 36, while James B., Nikhil M., and Tiger Z. scored an impressive 35 out of 36.
Sierra Canyon's Upper School Math Team continues to distinguish itself as one of the top competitive math programs in the country. Congratulations to all team members and Coach Chris Tillman for a truly impressive year. Following their participation in the Stanford Math Tournament, the team will conclude their season at the Johns Hopkins Math Tournament this weekend.
