The Lower School Science Fair provided a dynamic day of discovery and exploration as students in Grades 3–5 showcased a wide range of engaging, student-driven projects involving STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
The event began with a parent breakfast at the Farmhouse, where faculty shared insights into the students' two-month preparational journey to the Science Fair. Following the overview, parents visited classrooms to explore student projects, each a testament to our young scientists' hard work and curiosity that integrated elements of STEAM into their investigations.
This year marked an exciting milestone with the addition of 3rd Grade students to the Science Fair. Their participation focused on a research-based exploration of the solar system, as they developed foundational research and writing skills while constructing detailed planet models to illustrate their findings. Students in 4th Grade investigated three key areas—seeds, magnetism, and ants—with highlights including seed germination in varied conditions, behavioral studies of Red Harvesting ants, and investigations into the iron content of common breakfast cereals. Their discoveries were thoughtfully presented on well-designed display boards. Experimenters in 5th Grade created interactive PowerPoint presentations, applying their technological skills to share their results. From determining which polymers are most effective in cleaning oil spills to uncovering whether a human or a dog's mouth contains more bacteria, these students demonstrated both scientific rigor and intellectual curiosity across every stage of the investigative process.
The Science Fair continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Lower School experience, uniting students in a vibrant celebration of scientific inquiry. Their efforts also offered younger Trailblazers in Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd Grade an inspiring glimpse into future learning—sparking curiosity and excitement for what lies ahead at Sierra Canyon.
