Sierra Canyon Upper Campus hosted its second annual Wellness Wednesday, a day dedicated to promoting physical, mental, and emotional health.
In collaboration with student-led groups—including the Student Wellness Ambassador Program, Mental Health Club, and Mental Health for Athletes Club—Wellness Wednesday provided a well-rounded experience for students, offering opportunities for creativity, physical activity, mental clarity, and skill development. Creative outlets such as fused glass art, vision board creation, and a cupcake decorating contest fostered self-expression, while yoga, weight training, indoor pickleball, and a session at the Mayweather Boxing Studio promoted physical wellness. Activities like sound wave therapy, board games, and sensory play supported mental clarity, and skill-building sessions, including CPR training and academic support, further enhanced students' personal growth and development.
Community was a central theme of Wellness Wednesday, reinforcing the values of service and gratitude. In collaboration with the American Red Cross, Sierra Canyon hosted an on-campus Blood Drive, where faculty, staff, and students donated over 30 units of blood. The event's success was driven by the efforts of 50 student volunteers, who played a vital role in its coordination and execution.
The following seminars were offered to equip students with valuable skills and resources:
- Coping Skills Toolbox – Students developed personalized coping strategies for managing stress and emotions.
- Financial Wellness – Led by Mr. Bowers, this session offered students strategies for improving financial health and goal-setting.
- Matters of the Mind – A session designed to help students explore their emotions and practice mindfulness.
- Procrastinate Less, Achieve More, and Enjoy Free Time! – Guest speaker Silvana Horn addressed procrastination and study strategies.
- Q&A: Maintaining Self-Care – A discussion led by licensed clinical social worker Jill Rice on practical ways to enhance self-care routines.
- Real Love, No Filters – Dr. Dinusha de Silva-Carrasco discussed identifying healthy relationships and setting boundaries.
- Relationship to Food and Our Bodies – A conversation with licensed therapist Jesse Carmen-Hay about body image and food perceptions.
To conclude the program, Sierra Canyon alum Remy Martin '17 joined Wellness Director Dr. Serena Hobson for a thoughtful conversation on the importance of mental health and social well-being. Sharing personal insights and experiences, Remy encouraged students to prioritize their emotional wellness, cultivate meaningful connections, and embrace a balanced approach to success.
At Sierra Canyon, character and wellness are quintessential priorities for fostering well-adjusted students who develop capacities for empathy, altruism, and healthy attitudes toward whatever challenges they face.
