Congratulations to Sierra Canyon's Upper School Math Team on winning 2nd place in their division at the annual Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC)!
The PUMaC competition encompasses a series of rigorous components, attracting top students from across the nation to participate and compete at the highest level. Team members James B. '26, Owen L. '27, Thomas L. '28, Atticus M. '27, Thomas M. '27, Michael W. '27, Chris X. '27, and Tiger Z. '25 proudly represented Sierra Canyon at this prestigious competition.
In the week leading up to the event, the Upper School Math Team dedicated extensive time, both at home and at school, to tackle PUMaC's highly demanding Power Round, ultimately earning an impressive 4th place in their division. This rigorous, week-long contest component required students to collaborate in developing and writing advanced mathematical proofs involving complex theorems on fractals and iterated function systems based on topological concepts such as distance metrics and Hausdorff measures. Each Trailblazer committed over 30 hours to this effort, gaining invaluable insights into upper-division college-level mathematics.
Each team member's performance contributed to their collective success, and their individual achievements showcase the impressive skill and teamwork they demonstrated throughout the competition:
Individual Rounds:
- Algebra: Tiger – 1st place
- Geometry: James – 11th place, Michael – 13th place, Atticus – 30th place
- Combinatorics: Tiger – 1st place, Atticus – 17th place
The achievements of the Upper School Math Team exemplify Sierra Canyon's dedication to offering programs that inspire students to explore advanced disciplines, foster critical thinking, and collaborate to solve complex challenges at the highest level.
