Trailblazer News

Students in 1st Grade recently embarked on a hands-on Computer Science challenge.

Through this unplugged activity, students were introduced to the concept of algorithms—a series of step-by-step instructions designed to solve problems. Without the use of computers or digital devices, these young coders brought foundational coding concepts to life through hands-on exploration.

To begin the activity, students constructed their own unique mini-robots from Legos. Working in pairs, they designed mazes with intricate obstacles and imaginative features. Reflecting on the experience, Gia K. '36 shared, "My favorite part was bringing our robots to life from our imagination."

Next, they used directional tiles to create step-by-step algorithms to guide their mini-robots through the mazes. Through trial and error, they quickly learned how even the slightest mistake in their sequence could disrupt their robot's journey. As Ryan K. '36 shared, "I loved programming my robot through the maze my partner and I created because we made a lava pool that it had to get around!"

Sierra Canyon provides a dynamic learning environment that facilitates positive student growth. At the Lower School, our expert teachers inspire a love of learning, laying the foundation for future achievements.
