Sierra Canyon's Upper School Math Team achieved impressive results at this year's prestigious Berkeley Math Tournament (BMT).

The annual event held at the University of California, Berkeley (Cal) welcomed over 1,200 students and 200 teams from around the world. Known for its intense challenges, the BMT featured multiple rounds of team and individual contests crafted by Cal math majors. Participants were tested on various mathematical concepts, requiring individual problem-solving skills and effective teamwork.

The students who competed were led by captain Tiger Z. '25, alongside co-captains James B. '26 and Nikhil M. '26. Team members included Rachel G. '28, Miranda L. '25, Thomas L. '28, Atticus M. '27, Thomas M. '27, Rayton S. '29, Chris X. '26, and Ryan X. '26. They were accompanied by Assistant Math Team Coach/Math Department Chair Veronica Bryan and Computer Science Chair J.D. DeVaughn-Brown.

Individual Achievements

  • Geometry: Tiger Z. earned 1st place. Thomas M. and James B. received Distinguished Honorable Mention, while Nikhil M. earned Honorable Mention.
  • Discrete Round: Tiger Z. secured 4th place. Thomas M. received Distinguished Honorable Mention, while James B. and Atticus M. earned Honorable Mention.
  • Algebra: Chris X. earned Honorable Mention.
  • General Round: Thomas L. and Ryan X. both received Honorable Mention.

Team Results

Of 202 teams—many of which were regional "all-star" teams—Sierra Canyon placed 32nd in the Guts Round and 40th in the Power Round, ranking in the top 18% overall. The final standings for the other team components are still pending, but Sierra Canyon's dedication and teamwork will surely be recognized.

Congratulations to the Upper School Math Team on their outstanding fall achievements. Their success reflects Sierra Canyon's commitment to academic and personal excellence, where each student is supported and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
