Our 3rd Grade students recently had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Tongva, the First Peoples of Los Angeles, through an engaging on-campus presentation by a representative from the Autry Museum.
This enriching experience was part of the Autry in Residence program, which brings museum educators into schools to provide interactive learning opportunities centered on the American West. During the visit, the presenter shared captivating stories, illustrating how the Tongva people skillfully utilized natural resources to thrive in their environment. Makayla S. '34 shared her thoughts on the experience, saying, "I enjoyed learning about the artifacts and seeing the things they created." To enhance the experience, 3rd Grade teachers transformed a classroom into a dynamic exhibit space, showcasing artifacts from the Autry Museum. Students had the chance to examine traditional tools, baskets, and materials, gaining insights into their craftsmanship and practical uses. "I liked that we got to touch the artifacts they brought and learn about the tribes," added Marcel L. '34.
The visit meaningfully extended the 3rd Grade curriculum on Indigenous cultures, enhancing the students' ongoing study of the Kwakiutl Nation. Experiential learning is a cornerstone of a Sierra Canyon education, reflecting the School's mission to provide students with opportunities to explore the world beyond the classroom and to connect these experiences with their academic studies.
