Our 5th Grade students recently explored the world of atoms, creating three-dimensional models to showcase the structure and different components of various elements.
Through the I Made an Atom project, these young scientists brought elements like neon, magnesium, fluorine, and oxygen to life, designing detailed atom models that showcase their creativity and understanding of atomic structure. Each student chose an element and gathered everyday objects—such as buttons, bolts, beads, and pipe cleaners—to represent protons, neutrons, and electrons. Using their atom information sheets, they ensured accuracy in the number and arrangement of particles within electron shells while following size guidelines, keeping protons and neutrons similar in size, and orbiting electrons smaller.
The project culminated with a presentation day, where students showcased their models and practiced their public speaking and presentation skills. They explained their approach to creating the model and detailed their element's characteristics, demonstrating to classmates their understanding of atomic structure. These presentations allowed everyone to see varied interpretations of each element, sparking thoughtful questions and discussions that transformed the classroom into an interactive space for learning and creativity.
