"SC United!" could have been the rallying cry at Sierra Canyon's inaugural Boys and Girls Soccer Showcase on January 17. The fun-filled sporting event held at SC Stadium brought soccer teams and families from both campuses together to celebrate the beautiful game.
"I thought it was great to see our athletes participate on the varsity stage throughout the day," said Aldo Rocha, Athletics Director for the Lower and Middle School sports teams. "All the credit goes to our Athletic Department and soccer coaches for putting on a great community event. We are excited about the future of our Boys and Girls Soccer programs."
The 5th and 6th Grade student-athletes kicked off the showcase with simultaneous scrimmages at separate ends of the field. Sierra Canyon announcer Jack Pollon called out their names before the Jumbotron displayed a ticking game clock. Off the pitch, students noshed on free hot dogs, chips, and drinks courtesy of Andy's game day foods. They also received a free raffle ticket for an opportunity to win gift cards or a swag bag from the spirit wear pop-up shop. And when the dessert trucks rolled with Bearies Açaí bowls and The Twist churros, the party officially had started.
One of the biggest highlights of the day came from the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, which played a league match against the Louisville Royals. Freshman midfielder Giselle A. '28 opened the scoring off a penalty kick, and senior forward Olivia T. '25 followed with a sensational goal. Seniors Emerson M. '25 and Turtle D. '25 also found the back of the net. At halftime, the 4th Grade Soccer Teams ran onto the field to scrimmage as their names blared over the speakers. After taking photos on the pitch, the younger Trailblazers headed back to the stands and watched the Varsity Team complete the win, 5-1.
"It was great to have the Lower School teams attend the game," said Will Beard, Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team, "and even better to get our first league win in front of them."
The Boys Varsity and JV Soccer Teams also played that day, taking on league rival St. Francis. Despite losing both matches, there were plenty of reasons to smile, starting with how hard the boys played.
"We have made huge improvements all across the field, and it is really motivating to see the growth of our program," said Rafa Garcia, Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Soccer Team. "We still have a lot of work to do, but we are happy with how our boys are competing and setting the foundation for a successful program."
At halftime of the varsity game, the Middle School Teams played an intrasquad game in front of their largest crowd of the season, offering a glimpse into the future of Sierra Canyon Soccer. Even better, this year's event raised money for St. Francis families affected by the wildfires, with the La Canada-Flintridge School being situated so close to the Eaton Fire.
Judging by all the smiles and standout performances, the inaugural Soccer Showcase was a tremendous success. For the first time in School history, soccer teams from both campuses competed together—united in one place for one beautiful day.
