Author and critic Steph Cha visited Sierra Canyon on Tuesday, December 10, inspiring students and the community with her insights on literature and storytelling.
Cha's critically acclaimed novel, Your House Will Pay, served as the centerpiece of the discussion. In the afternoon, she participated in a Q&A with 9th Grade students to discuss her book, which they had recently finished reading in their English classes. The novel explores themes of racial tension, family loyalty, and redemption, set against a historically significant period in Los Angeles. Cha shared insights into her writing process while discussing the challenges she faced in creating the characters and recreating the historical period in her novel. Lindley A. '28 added, "I learned that it takes a lot of time and energy to write a novel and that you have to embody the character you're writing about to capture what you want them to say and do."
For aspiring writers, Cha encouraged students to "read, read, read" as the foundation for developing their voices. She expressed admiration for notable noir authors like Raymond Chandler, whose novel The Big Sleep seniors will read in the spring.
The evening event, held in the Lower Campus Rubin Family Library, featured a book reading, signing, and panel discussion. The panelists—Addis R. '28, Lindley A. '28, Helena D. '28, and Sam C. '28—sparked a thought-provoking conversation with Cha about various aspects of her book, from the inspiration to the cultural nuances explored in the story. "She engaged seriously with the students' good questions, and her answers were thoughtful and profound," said Mr. Salamon. Sydney D. '28 noted, "It takes a lot of heart to be a good writer. Ms. Cha said that she puts some of herself in each of her characters." The discussion also prompted questions from parents and community members, highlighting their interest in the diverse perspectives shared.
Steph Cha's visit provided an enriching opportunity for students and families, sparking engaging conversation and deepening their appreciation for literature and the creative process.
