This fall, we’re proud to share that our 6th Grade Girls Basketball and Middle School Girls Volleyball Teams both achieved at the highest level in their respective leagues.
The 6th Grade Girls Basketball Team coached by Sandell Jones secured their Championship, even while playing on the road throughout the playoffs. The Team went to Mirman in the first round of the playoffs and won on an outdoor court before heading to Curtis for the final game, where they faced a team to whom they had lost during the regular season. That initial loss was a tremendous learning experience, as they immediately set out to improve their strategy and skills in their next practice and looked forward to possibly meeting them again.
To counter act Curtis’ strength, speed, and height advantage, the Team employed a triangle-and-two defense. This shift proved to have a profound impact on their follow-up match, but the Championship still came down to the final minute. With 36 seconds left in the game, up 21-17, Juliet S. '31 garnered a shooting foul and went to the line for two free throws. Making a clutch first, she then rebounded her second attempt and put it right back up for two in the paint, sealing the victory with a seven-point lead.
Lulu S. '31, Presley O. '31, Alina O. '31, and Juliet were all returning starters from last season when their Lower School team put together an undefeated championship season; however, they were tested far more this year as competition has become even greater. The Most Valuable Player this year was Lulu who served as co-captain along with Presley. When asked about her success this year, Lulu magnanimously commented, “It was all due to the team and how we came together.”
The Middle School Girls Volleyball Team, guided by coaches Darryl Adams, Fia Faumuina, and Alo Fasavulu, achieved an extraordinary undefeated season, culminating in their first-ever Championship victory. Made up of 7th and 8th Grade student-athletes, the Team's success was built on a foundation of growth, resilience, and camaraderie. For the 7th Grade players, this win added to a streak of championships earned in the 5th and 6th Grades. For the 8th Grade student-athletes, it marked a long-anticipated triumph.
Team captain Sydney R. '29 reflected on the challenges of previous seasons, which ended in the semi-finals due to struggles with communication and energy during critical moments. This year, however, a strong bond of friendship and mutual support transformed the Team. “The chemistry of the team this year really helped,” Sydney shared.
The Championship match saw Sierra Canyon face an electrifying rematch with a familiar opponent, Oaks Christian. Each team claimed a set, leaving the title hanging in the balance. Drawing strength from their mantra, trust the process and the system, and the thunderous support of their home crowd, the girls stayed composed under pressure. With determination and teamwork, they pushed through to secure the title, capping off an unforgettable season.
The common threads weaving these Middle School Teams together were an unflinching belief in themselves and their efficacy. Congratulations to both groups on an incredible season.
