Pre-Kindergarten to 5th Grade students participated in a cross-curricular experience centered around The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.

The story, globally recognized for its inspiring message of creative thinking and believing in yourself, provided the perfect foundation for Library class discussions. Lower School readers reflected on the themes of The Dot, with many inspired by Vashti, the protagonist, who learns to embrace her creativity and encourages others to do the same. One student remarked that the story reminded them of the saying, "Art is in the eye of the beholder," sparking deeper conversations about how art can be interpreted in many ways.

As part of the unit on Library Science, students explored how "dots" in the Library help identify different sections and types of books, tying the story's theme into a real-world context. They expressed their creativity by designing their own dots, while 3rd through 5th Grade also enjoyed a challenging dot-themed strategy game called "Circle Pairs." Both activities allowed students to tap into their imagination while enhancing problem-solving and collaboration skills.

The excitement continued in Computer Science as learners brought their dot creations to life using an Augmented Reality (AR) app, transforming their dot designs into spherical images. Some dots represented their unique selves, and others focused on technological concepts, exploring how dots are integral to the digital world. Student observations highlighted how dots help navigate websites, like the dot in "dot com," and how many computer buttons are shaped like dots to serve specific functions. By linking AR with Computer Science, students explored how digital elements can enhance real-world interactions while gaining insight into basic AR programming.

These innovative cross-curricular lessons sparked imagination and ignited an interest in AR programming, encouraging students to think critically about technology's impact on the world. As we celebrated International Dot Day, it was inspiring to see our Trailblazers discover the meaningful intersection of art and technology.
