On Wednesday, September 18, during Community Time, 10th through 12th Grade students gathered for a special presentation from Mrs. Susanne Reyto, a Holocaust survivor.

The event, organized by Sierra Canyon's Jewish Student Union president, Sienna M. '25, gave students a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a witness to some of the darkest moments of the twentieth century. Born in Hungary in March 1944, just before the Nazi invasion, Susanne Reyto's early life was shaped by war, persecution, and the bravery of those who stood against oppression. Her family's survival, largely thanks to Swiss diplomat Carl Lutz and other courageous individuals, highlighted the strength of compassion. Though Hungary's Jewish population suffered devastating losses, Susanne's story is one of resilience.

After the war, the Reyto family faced new challenges under Soviet communist rule, enduring imprisonment, loss of property, and multiple failed escape attempts. Despite these hardships, they eventually found freedom in 1957, fleeing to Australia to start a new chapter. Susanne's life became a testament to perseverance as she went on to raise a family and share her experiences with audiences worldwide, emphasizing that survival is not just about enduring but also about moving forward with purpose.

Susanne's story reminded students of the importance of resilience, courage, and hope in the face of adversity, leaving a lasting impact and encouraging reflection on history's lessons and how we can carry them forward.
