Before the Trailblazers raced into the long weekend, the Class of 2030 put their solar car creations to the test in a thrilling race.
The annual 6th Grade Solar Car Race is a beloved Sierra Canyon tradition. Over the past few weeks, these young engineers have learned about the benefits of renewable energy. Working in small groups, they carefully designed and constructed their solar cars without using kits, creating unique blueprints and using various materials. Students took precise measurements, cut and sanded wood, and researched and analyzed different kinds of wheels before installing axles and bearing tubes. Each group collaboratively made decisions based on what they thought would best suit their car. The students also had to install an electrical system to power the vehicle and ensure its proper functioning during test runs. Lastly, they installed a solar panel on their car and hoped for sunny weather!
Once their solar cars were ready, students and spectators gathered at the Lower Campus basketball courts, lining up for the highly anticipated race. Each group hoped to be the fastest across the finish line, and many cars completed the course in record time due to innovative designs and sustainable energy sources. The event was a tremendous success, as this hands-on experience enhanced students' scientific knowledge and problem-solving skills and sparked a passion for sustainable technologies.
Congratulations to this year's winners:
1st Place - Solar Speed (Charlie B., Garrett P., and Milad S.)
2nd Place - Lucky Lightnings (Calliope E., Emma J., and Canton W.)
3rd Place - Speed of Light (Syon C., Kingston S., and Sachiel W.)
Well done, 6th Grade, for your hard work and dedication to this tradition!
