Congratulations to the Sierra Canyon Math Team on their remarkable finish at the Stanford Math Tournament!

Alex B. '24, James B. '26, Atticus M. '27, Nikhil M. '26, and Tiger Z. '25 made their way to Stanford last month, along with Coach Chris Tillman, to compete in a tournament that draws the best competitors from across the country.

  • Sierra Canyon placed 8th overall, with all competition rounds combined, finishing ahead of 61 other teams.
  • They tied for 4th place in the Team Round with five other top schools and regional programs.
  • Alex received a Distinguished Honorable Mention for his successful run at the daunting Algebra Round problems, earning a top 10% finish in the contest.
  • Tiger earned 3rd place overall in the Discrete Round and was uncontested 1st place in the Geometry Round.
  • In a dramatic finish, the Team finished 2nd place in the Guts Round.

The Guts Round is the most dynamic and exciting part of the contest, where live scores are updated as students run solutions in sets of three problems at a time. Coaches, parents, and competition organizers watch in a separate auditorium as updated results get posted. Coach Tillman watched as Sierra Canyon periodically hopped into the top ten and down again as other teams' scores also came in. The top opposing teams hit higher problem sets sooner than SC, but our scores indicated perfect answer sets each time. At the end of the round, Sierra Canyon finished 1st on the leaderboard with only the estimation question remaining. While the state of Washington team pulled ahead on that last question, Sierra Canyon's 2nd overall finish during this live round was an incredible achievement that helped solidify the Trailblazer's final placement in the contest.

Apart from the competition, the Team also had the opportunity to meet up with alum and former Sierra Canyon Math Team Captain Phillip M. '22, who gave them a tour of Stanford, its Math Department, Robotics lab, and Cecil H. Green Library. The students gained insight into campus life and studies while rehashing old memories of past math competitions.

Congratulations to the Math Team for their exceptional performance at the Stanford Math Tournament, which will undoubtedly inspire future successes.
