World Languages Week provided numerous opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to celebrate our diverse and inclusive community.
To kick off the week's festivities, Lower Campus students embarked on an immersive cultural journey, delving into the diverse traditions of the world. They were introduced to American Braille and witnessed a captivating presentation featuring a guide dog and its skilled handler. They also discovered the unique languages spoken in Guam and the Philippines, including Chamorro and Tagalog, and had the chance to learn the Armenian alphabet using colorful blocks. During their culinary adventure, they tasted savory crêpes from France, enjoyed Guyuria cookies and ube butter bars, and tasted Nanook, lahmacun, Armenian pizza, and German pretzels with cheese.
On Wednesday, 53 strings players from Pre-Kindergarten through 6th Grade graced the Upper Campus with their courage and bows, performing to the delight of students, faculty, and staff, led by Lower School Music teachers Dr. Deutsch and Mr. Pourghazi. Sra. Zurek also directed 1st and 4th Grade students as they sang "Marry Had a Little Lamb" in five different languages: English, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and American Sign. The Upper Campus audience thoroughly enjoyed the performances by these talented Trailblazers and showed enthusiastic support with cheers and applause.
The cultural celebrations on the Upper Campus included a delectable showcase of snacks from China, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil, curated by Sr. Ribeiro and the International Club. Students also participated in an ancient Greek and Roman vase painting competition and were treated to a mesmerizing display of Persian dance. Additionally, students indulged in French crêpes and Argentinian empanadas and participated in a Quiz Bowl to test their knowledge of language and culture. The conclusion of World Language Week was marked by the International Luncheon, a remarkable feast held in the Upper Campus Gym. With an array of sumptuous dishes from different parts of the world, it was an unforgettable experience that delighted all the senses and showcased the rich diversity of cultures and traditions.
Through these experiences, students gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for the diversity that enriches our world, fostering a sense of unity and cultural appreciation throughout the Sierra Canyon community.
