Students in 3rd Grade have inked their first writing unit complete with the rigor of the Writers Workshop program, including ideating, drafting, and peer-editing and culminating with a publishing party to celebrate.

The Class of 2033 is exploring the writing process and discovering the various steps to create a story. Catalyzing the creative channels, students assembled collages in their notebooks, cultivating a myriad of media, including personal pictures, familiar logos, images near and dear to each writer et al., and liberating their imaginations in words and phrases. Writers Workshop delves deep into what is unique about each student, drawing from their thoughts and experiences to harness their abilities at word-smithery in authentic authorial development. Through this brainstorming exercise, the foundation of their narrative emerged as these young authors narrowed down the subject by selecting one of their favorite small moments. They then created a timeline of their event of choice. Students use this writing technique to organize their thoughts and provide a clear structure for iterating their compositions.

Building on their engaging narratives, students incorporated transitions and learned how their use significantly affects the flow and coherence of a story. Teaching students to include sensory details and internal thoughts is equally essential. This approach is a fantastic way to bring their stories to life, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the narrative and connect with the characters and events on a deeper level. The authors reveled in their well-structured stories with a Publishing Party, where they shared their writing with their peers and flexed their confidence in public presentation and speaking.

These students are off to a strong start in their 3rd Grade writing journey. We look forward to seeing their progress as they explore the world of writing in the coming months.
