Finis origine - the end depends upon the beginning. An ecstatic energy is electrifying our 6th Grade students as they have just taken their first leap into and look forward to the profundity of ancient studies this year.

Sierra Canyon's World Languages program equips students with the linguistic tools to explore past cultures through language and participate in today's global society. During the opening days of the school year, 6th Grade students beamed with enthusiasm as they selected Latin names and learned how to greet one another. Many new concepts involved in learning Latin grammar, like conjugations and declensions, will also be introduced to students as they continue their language studies throughout the year. In addition, as part of their Latin studies, they are exploring the sites of Ancient Rome's Forum Romanum, Colosseum, and Circus Maximus with their Roman friends Lucius and Cornelia and discussing Latin's influence on English and Romance languages. The discipuli (students) are already clamoring to begin their next unit on Greek and Roman mythology!

To honor the many languages and cultures that make up our community and the diversity of our students and their families, a thorough study of foreign language, literature, and history is a crucial component of our curriculum. If you look back on that first sentiment, finis origine, consider how much the Romans valued being powerfully parsimonious and practical in their expression. Their thoughts cradled these priorities; the rivets of their language edified these cultural virtues.

"My students enter my classroom each day filled with enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge," said Mrs. Anderson. "They genuinely embody our school motto: Excellentia propter se, (Excellence is its own reward).”
