Sierra Canyon's Kindergarten through 8th Grade Math Teams have had resoundingly successful fall and winter.

A highlight of the season was the Noetic Learning Contest, a rigorous twenty-question competition designed to challenge mathematical problem-solving skills. Sierra Canyon students approached the competition with determination, and their outstanding results reflected their perseverance. For the second consecutive year, the Class of 2034 achieved top recognition, with three new students contributing to this distinction. The team had the highest number of students on the National Honor Roll, with six students ranking in the top 10% nationwide and 17 students earning Honorable Mention, placing in the top 50%. The following students achieved National Honor Roll status:

Each grade-level team demonstrated a strong performance, with the 4th, 7th, and 8th Grade teams narrowly missing Team Awards. Beyond the Noetic Learning Contest, Lower and Middle School Math Talso compete in prestigious competitions such as the Caribou Cup and Arete Labs, further showcasing their mathematical excellence.

Students have completed four of the seven Caribou Cup contests to date, with several earning both national and global recognition based on their cumulative performance. Each contest presents a series of challenging mathematical and logical problems, including at least one interactive component. The upcoming contest will focus on Chess, requiring students to determine checkmate in one or two moves (see pictures). Additionally, the competition will feature the popular Calcrostic challenge, in which students assign numerical values to letters to form one-, two-, or three-digit numbers (see pictures). The following students ranked in the top 10% of the world:

Another highly popular contest is the weekly AreteLab, a fast-paced, team-based challenge where students compete against other schools. With only 30 minutes to solve a series of challenging questions, the Class of 2034 competed in the 3rd–5th Grade bracket and advanced to the semifinals, defeating several 5th Grade teams nationwide. Notably, the Class of 2030 secured first place in their division for smaller schools, overcoming an undefeated 8th Grade team in the finals.

Math Team features varied ways to encounter interesting problems and engaging games. There is still time to test it out, join the fun, and enjoy the comradery of competing with fellow Trailblazers. If interested, reach out to Mr. Tom Keller at [email protected]!
