To bring the Gold Rush to life, 4th Grade students spent the day participating in hands-on learning activities.
Students started the morning with a Gold Rush presentation in the Lower Campus Amphitheater, which tested their knowledge about the period and offered a glimpse into the experiences that awaited them throughout the day.
After the presentation, they headed to the Upper Courts and tried their hand at Western Line and Square Dancing. Students went through different stations, including candle-making, where they each made a candle using traditional techniques as a keepsake. They also panned for gold, learned calf roping and rope tricks, and played pioneer games. Panning for gold was fun and insightful, giving a deeper understanding of the challenges of the Gold Rush era. Calf roping highlighted the skills needed for ranching and livestock management, while rope tricks showcased cowboy culture. The event concluded with pioneer games, which are still enjoyed today, including classics like checkers and tic-tac-toe.
Learning about the Gold Rush was an educational journey into a significant historical event. The students enjoyed the engaging and immersive activities and were grateful for the way their teachers brought history to life. Pearl P. '32 shared, "This has been my favorite Sierra Canyon experience so far."
