Sierra Canyon's student filmmakers forged a new chapter in the history of the School's growing filmmaking program and saw their work shown before an international audience.

During a stormy three-day weekend in the heart of New York City, the All-American High School Film Festival honored the best in student filmmaking at the country's busiest theater, the AMC Times Square. In attendance were seven Sierra Canyon students and their teacher, Mr. Gvozden, some of whom set a new school record with ten accepted films earlier in the year. In the following months, as they excitedly planned a trip to the Big Apple to represent the School, they celebrated their achievements with the Upper Campus community, showcasing their journey and hard work.

The festival began with a late-night cruise around New York Harbor, hosted by Hofstra University's film program, offering a memorable experience with a white tablecloth dinner, dancing, conversations, and an up-close-and-personal view of the Statue of Liberty. It was a tremendous time for growing team comradery and conversations with the festival's co-founder, Tom Oliva. The following two days were full of screenings in Times Square, where the team supported the work of their peers and participated in college fairs, technology demos, networking lunches, and lessons with college professors. On Saturday night, the "Best of Fest" screening showcased stellar student work, setting the stage for the Tindie Awards (Teen Indie Awards) the following night at the historic King's Theater in Brooklyn. The Tindie Awards, equivalent to the Oscars for high school students, celebrated outstanding student filmmaking while awarding over half a million dollars in prizes and scholarships.

Sierra Canyon broke another previous record with four nominations in various categories:

Katelynn W. '25, "Presence," for Best Adventure/Travel Film

Sam L. '24, "After We Play," for Best Music Video

Sam L., "Nine 2 Five", for Best Music Video

Willow S. '25, "Mother, may I?" for Emerging Talent Award

Willow received a second consecutive nomination for the Emerging Talent Award, recognizing the best film from a 9th-11th Grade student. Sam earned the distinction of being the only artist nominated twice in a single category.

Congratulations to our student filmmakers whose creativity and passion illuminated screens at the prestigious All-American High School Film Festival. Recognition from such a regarded festival is truly a life-changing opportunity. Your Sierra Canyon family salutes you and your dedication and passion for the arts.
