On Wednesday, November 6, the 5th Grade led an assembly for the Lower Campus honoring the United States military veterans.
Head of School Jim Skrumbis began the assembly by framing the significance of Veterans Day to the gathered Kindergarten through 6th Grade students. The Lower School String Ensemble, accompanied by Sierra Canyon CFO Richard Shapiro on percussion, next performed a stirring rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. The Lower School Chorus then joined the 5th Grade for a heartfelt performance of Veterans, We Love You. Following the musical components, 5th Grade students shared an in-depth presentation on the history of Veterans Day as a federal holiday, honoring the diversity within our military.
The 5th Grade teaching team organized this meaningful Veterans Day program, which also incorporated a welcome to military guests from the Sierra Canyon community, including faculty, staff, family, and friends representing various branches of the armed forces. "The armed forces are such an important part of the history of the United States, and honoring my family and members of our Sierra Canyon community made it more meaningful and impactful. I couldn't have been any prouder of our 5th Grade students and student body for coming together and respecting the people who fought and continue to fight for our freedom," shared 5th Grade teacher, Mr. Johnson. As part of the event, the military guests led a powerful demonstration on properly folding the American flag. This assembly was truly a unique opportunity for young Trailblazers to celebrate military members.
Coming together as a community to honor the heroes who have served our country is a meaningful way to deepen the understanding of the significance of November 11th. To our veterans, past and present, we salute you!
