Ask Oliver Krentzman '17 about his Sierra Canyon days, and he will tell you it was a time of true friendships and unforgettable adventures that fueled his lifelong passion for discovery. From 2012 to 2017, Oliver truly found his place in the SC community, forming connections that have lasted far beyond graduation. It's hard for him to choose just one favorite memory from his time at Sierra Canyon, but his Peak Week trip to Italy stands out. Exploring ancient landmarks with his closest friends on that trip opened his eyes to new cultures and left him with memories he'll cherish forever. Looking back, he reflects that Sierra Canyon wasn't just a place to learn; it was a place that shaped the way he sees the world today.
From SC to Cognitive Science at Berkeley
Though Oliver's path to neuroscience began after his time at Sierra Canyon, the foundation was already in place. "The academic rigor at SC taught me the importance of intellectual exploration and discipline," he shares. Instructors encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving skills that prepared him for the journey ahead. In particular, Mr. Romano's English class sparked an enduring appreciation for classic literature, and Mr. Winetrobe's AP American History course always brought lively discussions, deepening his understanding of historical context. Oliver even cites his History of Rock and Roll elective as a favorite, looking back, as it offered him a unique look into the cultural power of music. He was also involved in the Performing Arts department, acting in Our Town, You Can't Take It With You, and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Like many other SC acting alums, Oliver credits this experience with developing his public speaking skills.
After graduating from SC, Oliver attended Pierce Community College to study Italian. But soon, his interest would shift dramatically when he met Dr. Tim DeLorey, a neuroscientist whose work at the intersection of consciousness research and pharmacology inspired him to change his major and pursue biology. Eventually graduating from UC Berkeley, Oliver earned his degree in Cognitive Science. "During my time at Berkeley, I joined Dr. Linda Wilbrecht's lab, studying adolescent neurobiology and decision-making in mice. Alongside my lab work, I also pursued an independent research project focused on the subjective effects of breathwork techniques. Oliver's time at UC Berkeley yielded one of his proudest accomplishments to date when he received Highest Honors for his senior thesis, The Cognitive, Psychological, and Physical Effects of Wim Hof’s Breathing Method: An Exploratory Study. "It was a rewarding recognition of my hard work and research." You can read his thesis here.
By this time, the next step was clear, "These experiences revealed my passion for designing experiments and conducting research, which ultimately motivated me to apply to graduate programs in Neuroscience."
Diving into Neuroscience and Mental Health
Now in his third year as a Neuroscience PhD candidate at Washington University Medical School, Oliver focuses on the biological underpinnings of rapid-acting antidepressants, particularly psychedelics. Working under Dr. Jordan McCall at the Center for Clinical Pharmacology, he is exploring cellular mechanisms that could lead to breakthroughs in antidepressant medications.
Balancing Professional Pursuits and Personal Life
While his research demands focus, Oliver values balance, "I am currently serving my second year on the Neuroscience Steering Committee at WashU, where I plan social events for the Neuroscience program." In his free time, he also loves playing guitar, going for runs, and discovering new breweries in lively St. Louis.
Advice for Aspiring Scientists and Future Goals
For SC students interested in neuroscience, Oliver recommends contacting local labs for research opportunities: "Researchers are often eager to mentor young scientists, and hands-on lab experience can be transformative." His biggest piece of advice? "Do something you love—it makes the journey worthwhile, challenges and all." Looking ahead, Oliver hopes to lead his own neuroscience lab and develop products and services that bring practical neuroscience knowledge to the public. We hope that Oliver's lab will be home to future SC graduates looking for their own path in neuroscience someday!
Continuing SC Connections and Looking Back
Though life keeps him busy, Oliver stays in close contact with many of his friends from Sierra Canyon. "These friendships mean the world to me," he reflects, "Sierra Canyon attracts passionate and driven students, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to build friendships with such incredible people. These connections have not only lasted over the years but have also enriched my life in many ways."
His message for fellow Trailblazers is to be open to life's unexpected turns. "I wasn't focused on science in high school, but unexpected experiences led me to discover my passion for neuroscience," he shares. "Stay open; life can surprise you in the best ways."
