Human Rights Club Assembly

The Human Rights Club focuses on educating the student body about human rights and violations.

This semester, they are focusing on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the document that spells out extra protections for children under the age of eighteen, and how these rights are violated by climate change. In their mission to make the campus greener, they conducted a waste audit and placed recycling bins in classrooms that didn't have them. Several members also presented to the school on Friday the 22
nd about how climate change affects children and their right to safety, a future, and well-being. The club planned an inspiring assembly complete with practical suggestions of how to be more green, a perspective-lending video (click here to view), and an interactive game of Kahoot to quiz the student body about environmental matters. Mr. Riley also suggested several ways students can lower their carbon footprint and the environmental and health-related dangers of using too much disposable plastic.

Two weeks ago, Youbin Cho '21, Xinyu Song '20, and Gowri Vadmal '20 attended the annual Human Rights Watch Gala in Beverly Hills and learned about HRW's progress in exposing violations and bringing those accountable to justice. They also joined the rest of the Student Task Force and discussed how different schools are spreading awareness about human rights to their schools.
