Trailblazer News

The Kindergarten through 6th Grade math teams and the Middle School Competitive Math elective teams enjoyed a rousingly successful end to the year, including stratospheric accomplishments across multiple competitions.

AreteLabs

In Sierra Canyon's first year of participating in the AreteLabs contest, a "March Madness"-style individual and team competition, 7th Grade won its bracket after facing several schools over the course of two months. Despite being in a bracket with 4th and 5th Grade, 3rd Grade still finished just out of the finals round!

Noetic Learning Math Contest

Students also took the spring Noetic Learning Math Contest, where, for the first time, two grade levels earned team awards for high scores: 2nd Grade team, which featured Kindergarten and 1st Grade participants, and 3rd Grade team, whose achievements as a grade level have been record-breaking—the numbers proclaiming their success:

  • Number of 3rd Grade Math Team members who took the Noetic: 26.
  • Number of students who were in the top 10% in the country, earning an Honor Award: 10.
  • Semesters in a row the Class of 2034 has earned a Team Award Plaque, signifying the top six scores amounting to one of the greatest math squads in the country: 3.
  • The fact that all of these accomplishments and numbers are conspicuously unprecedented: priceless.

Students also participate in the Caribou Cup and Math Kangaroo competitions.

The Caribou Cup Contest

The Caribou Cup is an international online math contest comprising eight individual contests throughout the year. It offers at least one interactive game of logic and many problem-solving opportunities, featuring concepts that typically fall outside of the standard curriculum—such as advanced number theory, combinatorics, and precocious algebraic topics. The following students finished in the top 20% worldwide, competing against tens of thousands of competitors per grade level.

There are plenty of opportunities to keep your child(ren)'s math chops up over the summer and heading into the 2025–2026 academic year. Sierra Canyon is one of the only private independent schools to offer math teams from Kindergarten through 12th Grade, along with competitive math electives for Middle and Upper School. For any questions, ideas, or opportunities, please contact Tom Keller at [email protected]—and happy summer!
